MLD is a very special type of massage designed to stimulate the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is part of our vascular system and an important part of the immune system. It comprises of a network of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes that carry a fluid, called lymph, from our tissues back towards the heart and our circulatory system.
Swelling can occur after injury and surgery as well as other conditions and is generally localised. Regular MLD is recommended to reduce the swelling from the tissues, leading to a quicker healing time.
A compromised lymphatic system can lead to a Swollen areas depending on several factors some swelling is a condition called lymphoedema. MLD deals with localised fluid retention and tissue swelling. Although there is no cure for lymphoedema it may be possible to control the main symptoms using MLD to minimise fluid build-up in the tissues and stimulate the flow of fluid through the lymphatic system back to the heart.
Lymphatic drainage techniques provide stimulation to the lymph vessels under the skin. It encourages them to work harder and find new pathways to drain lymph away from the swollen area.
